What Are Copper Grades?

Copper grades classify copper materials based on their purity, composition, and intended use. The most common designation system in North America is the UNS (Unified Numbering System), which uses "C" followed by five digits.

C110

C11000 (ETP Copper)

Electrolytic Tough Pitch - Most widely used electrical grade copper

  • ✓ 99.90% minimum copper content
  • ✓ Excellent electrical conductivity (101% IACS)
  • ✓ Good formability and weldability
  • ✓ Cost-effective for high-volume production
C101

C10100 (OFE Copper)

Oxygen-Free Electronic - Ultra-high purity copper

  • ✓ 99.99% minimum copper content
  • ✓ Maximum electrical conductivity (101% IACS)
  • ✓ Superior hydrogen embrittlement resistance
  • ✓ Premium pricing for critical applications

Key Differences Between C110 and C101

Property C11000 (ETP) C10100 (OFE)
Copper Purity 99.90% min 99.99% min
Oxygen Content 200-400 ppm 5 ppm max
Electrical Conductivity 101% IACS 101-103% IACS
Price Range Standard 15-30% premium
Best Applications General electrical High-vacuum, critical

When to Use C11000 (ETP Copper)

Ideal Applications:

  • Electrical wiring & cables - Building wires, power distribution
  • Bus bars & terminals - Electrical panels, switchgear
  • Plumbing tubes - Water lines, HVAC systems
  • Roofing & architecture - Flashing, gutters, decorative elements
  • Heat exchangers - Radiators, cooling systems

When to Use C10100 (OFE Copper)

Ideal Applications:

  • High-vacuum systems - No outgassing, ideal for aerospace
  • Semiconductor equipment - Ultra-clean manufacturing
  • Waveguides & RF applications - Maximum conductivity needed
  • Cryogenic equipment - Superconductor connections
  • Medical devices - Where purity is critical

💡 Expert Recommendation

For 95% of industrial applications, C11000 (ETP) is the best choice due to its excellent performance-to-cost ratio. Only choose C10100 (OFE) when your application specifically requires ultra-high purity or hydrogen-free atmosphere resistance.

Other Common Copper Grades

C10200 - Oxygen-Free (OF) Copper

99.95% pure, middle ground between ETP and OFE. Used in high-conductivity applications where some oxygen tolerance exists.

C12200 - Phosphorus Deoxidized (DHP) Copper

Contains phosphorus to remove oxygen. Excellent for welding and brazing applications. Used in HVAC and plumbing.

C14500 - Tellurium Copper

Enhanced machinability for high-speed machining operations. Used for connectors and precision parts.
